Let's make the first visit the easy one

Short, gentle, and mostly about your child deciding we are okay. Here is exactly what to expect.

Before you arrive

Three things, and you're ready

1 · Book & fill forms online

Book through our patient portal or call (615) 349-8450. New-patient forms are completed online before the visit — no clipboard juggling with a toddler on your hip.

2 · Bring three things

Your child's insurance or TennCare card, a list of any medications, and your questions. We handle the rest.

3 · Talk it up lightly

“The tooth doctor counts your teeth!” beats a big speech. Avoid words like shot, hurt, or drill — we have kid-friendly words for everything.

In the chair

What happens in the visit

For infants and toddlers, the exam often happens knee-to-knee — your child on your lap the whole time. Dr. Thompson shows every tool before using it, counts teeth, checks growth, cleans and applies fluoride as appropriate, and spends real time answering your questions: brushing, bottles, pacifiers, snacks, whatever you're wondering.

Then stickers happen.

FAQ

Questions parents ask us

When should my child first see a dentist?

By their first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth — whichever comes first. Early visits build comfort and catch small things while they're small.

Do you take TennCare?

Yes. We accept TennCare and most major dental plans, and we verify coverage before the visit. Insurance details →

My child is terrified of the dentist. What do you do differently?

We never rush, we show every tool first, and when a child needs more help relaxing we have every option from nitrous oxide to hospital dentistry. The comfort ladder →

Do you see children with special healthcare needs?

Yes — it's one of the things we're proudest of. How we adapt →

Can I stay with my child?

For young children and first visits, yes — you're part of the plan, especially for knee-to-knee exams. As kids grow more independent, many choose to go solo like big kids; we follow their lead, with you nearby.

What if my child has a dental emergency?

Call us at (615) 349-8450. During office hours we'll get you in; after hours, our voicemail explains what to do. For serious facial trauma or uncontrolled bleeding, go to the emergency room first. Emergency guidance →
