Insurance, TennCare & paying for care

Yes — Thompson Pediatric Dentistry accepts most major dental insurance plans and TennCare (administered by Renaissance Dental). No fine-print hunting and no surprises at checkout: we verify your child's coverage before the visit.

Commercial dental insurance

We work with most major dental plans. Before your child's first visit, call us with your card handy and we'll verify benefits — what's covered, what isn't, how much of your annual maximum remains, and what any recommended treatment would cost out of pocket. Plain answers, in writing, before the visit.

We file claims for you, and you can typically use FSA or HSA funds for your child's dental care — we'll provide the itemized documentation your plan needs.

TennCare, plainly explained

TennCare's children's dental benefit — administered by Renaissance Dental since November 2025 — generally covers the care kids need: regular checkups, cleanings, fluoride, sealants, fillings, and medically necessary treatment. Benefit details are set by TennCare and can change, so we verify your child's exact coverage before every visit. No surprises at checkout — that part is our promise, not the insurance company's.

What you need to bring: your child's TennCare card. That's it — we handle eligibility checks and claims.

Need a ride? TennCare offers members free transportation to dental appointments through its ride benefit (booked at least two business days ahead). Ask our front desk and we'll point you to the right number for your plan.

Sedation & hospital dentistry coverage

Sedation has its own coverage rules — including a Tennessee law that requires medical insurance to cover hospital anesthesia for children eight and under when treatment can't be done safely in the office, and TennCare's benefit for medically necessary sedation. The details are on our sedation page, and we help with the paperwork either way.

Paying without insurance

Call us anyway. You'll get transparent, written estimates before any treatment, we'll plan care in the order that matters most for your child's health, and we'll talk through payment options honestly. Every Nashville kid deserves a dental home.

Insurance FAQ

What parents ask about coverage

Do you accept commercial dental insurance?

Yes — we accept most major dental insurance plans. Call with your card handy and we'll verify your child's benefits before you come in, including what's covered and what any treatment would cost out of pocket.

Do you take TennCare?

Yes. TennCare dental benefits for children are administered by Renaissance Dental. Bring your child's TennCare card — we handle eligibility checks and claims, and we confirm your child's exact coverage before the visit.

Can you check my plan before the visit?

Yes — that's our standard practice for every family. Call (615) 349-8450 with your card and we'll verify coverage before your child's appointment.

Can I use FSA or HSA funds?

Typically yes — dental care for your child is generally an eligible expense for FSA and HSA funds. Check your plan's rules, and we'll provide the itemized documentation you need.

What if we don't have insurance?

Call us anyway. You'll get a clear written estimate before any treatment, and we'll help you plan care in the order that matters most for your child's health.

Does insurance cover sedation or hospital dentistry?

It often can be — TennCare's benefit generally covers medically necessary sedation, and Tennessee law requires medical insurance to cover hospital anesthesia charges for children eight and under when treatment can't be done safely in the office. Coverage always depends on your child's plan and situation — we verify before anything is scheduled. See our sedation page for details.
